Abstract:

Snapshots and portraits of Cherkovski and his literary milieu in San Francisco and beyond. Depicted in many photographs are Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Charles Bukowski, Jack Hirschman, Cherkovski's partner Jessie Cabrera, and Cherkovski family members Clare Cherry, Sam Cherry and Tanya Cherry. Among numerous others depicted are Bob Kaufman, Gregory Corso, Harold Norse, Jack Micheline, Allen Ginsburg, David Meltzer, Diane DiPrima, A.D. Winans, Eileen Kaufman, Francis Ford Coppola, James Broughton, John Ross, Cesar Chavez, Enrico Banducci, Henri Lenoir, Luke Gibney, Jim Carrol, Emma Bukowski, Chris Kanios, Jack Mueller, Janet Weiner, Charles Martinez, John Norton, Jack Foley, Adelle Foley, Yannis Livadas, Nicola Viviani, Patrick O'Sullivan, William Norton and Ludwig Zeller. Among the North Beach locations depicted are Caffe Trieste, City Lights Books and Enrico's. Also includes a few photographs of the Black Cat Cafe taken by Sam Cherry in the 1950s. Also includes several drawings and a few paintings, most by Cherkovski. Negatives depict unidentified persons.

Neeli Cherkovski was born Nelson Cherry in Santa Monica in 1945, to father Sam Cherry (who became an established photographer in San Francisco in the 1950s) and mother Clare Cherry; worked as a political consultant in the 1970s in Riverside; in 1975 moved to San Francisco to work for then-California Senator George Moscone; produced the first San Francisco Poetry Festival; friend and biographer of Charles Bukowski, Lawrence Ferlinghetti and Bob Kaufman; taught literature and philosophy at New College of California until the school closed in 2008.
